Exploring the Serenity of Belihuloya: Sri Lanka's Best-Kept Secret
A Taste of Sri Lanka
Exploring Pahanthudawa
I set off on my first adventure to Pahanthudawa, just a short drive from the Hawagala eco resort (about 2.5 km). I was excited to visit a waterfall and natural pool that had been on my bucket list for ages. After a quick stop to pay for parking, I headed down to the entrance.
The path started off easy, but soon I faced a narrow ledge over fast flowing water. My heart raced as I carefully crossed, holding my shoes in hand. There was no other way to get to the other side and to the waterfall. The trail became rocky, and I was cautious as I navigated the terrain. The trek through the vibrant jungle was thrilling. Along the way, I found small water pools and couldn’t resist dipping my feet into the cold, clear water, it felt amazing in the warm sun.
When I finally reached Pahanthudawa Waterfall, I was in awe of its beauty. The waterfall is named for its lamp-like shape and is important for the local community, powering a mini-hydropower plant. However, caution is advised when it comes to bathing here, the water level can rise quickly, within just 10 to 15 minutes during heavy rainfall, making it potentially dangerous. After taking in the stunning views, I discovered a tiny shop nearby. The sambol-topped hot uludu wade was so tasty that I had to try it! The shop owner was warm and welcoming. If you visit, make sure to stop by for a taste of her delicious treats, it added a nice touch to my day.
I’m proud to have finally checked this off my list!
A Challenge Worth Taking: Rabbit Rock
The next day, I had the chance to climb Rabbit Rock, a hike that promised both a challenge and a reward. As I started my journey, I followed the hotel staff’s advice and took a village trekker with me. They mentioned that many newcomers often struggle to find the right path, so having a guide was a wise choice. The guide who accompanied me was incredibly helpful and shared many stories about the village, enriching my experience even further.
When I finally reached the top, I was greeted by an amazing view that seemed to go on forever. The landscape was a beautiful mix of trees and mountains, showing just how stunning nature can be. I settled down to enjoy my meal, savoring each bite while overlooking the magnificent mountain range. The combination of the delicious food and the breathtaking scenery made for a perfect moment.
This experience on Rabbit Rock was more than just a hike; it was a journey into nature that I would always remember as a challenge worth taking.
Wash Away Your Tiredness by the Belihuloya River
After an exciting hike, I headed to the Belihuloya River, which is close to Hawagala Eco Resort. It was the perfect place to relax and cool off. When I arrived, I heard the water flowing and felt the fresh air around me. I dipped my toes into the cool river, which felt amazing after the hike. This is the first spot where people can bathe and unwind. Located near Hawagala Eco Resort, it was the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring.
I quickly changed and took a refreshing dip in the cool river. The water was perfect, washing away the heat of the day and revitalizing my tired muscles. The soothing sound of the water created a calming atmosphere that made me feel so good. If you’re ever near Hawagala Eco Resort, make sure to visit the Belihuloya River. It’s a great spot to unwind and enjoy nature’s beauty!
Immersing in Local Culture: Day in Kinchigune Village
Kinchigune is an ancient village which is almost totally submerged in the waters of the Samanalawewa Reservoir which came to being in 1980s. The people of this village have been engaged in the steel industry in addition to agriculture since the early days.
For my village walk, I was fortunate to have the same guide who accompanied me on my hike. His deep knowledge of the area was invaluable, especially since I was unfamiliar with the surroundings. He shared stories about the village and helped me understand its culture and history. One of the highlights of my visit was the warmth of the Kinchigune people. From the moment I arrived, everyone welcomed me with open arms. Families shared stories about their past, their challenges, and their joys, allowing me to participate in their daily activities. They included me in their lives, making me feel like I was part of their community for a short time.
If you ever get the chance to visit this region, I highly recommend spending time with the wonderful people of Kinchigune, you won’t regret it!
